Radio-Frequency Ablation (aka, RFA, The Venefit Procedure® or VNUS Closure)
The Radio-frequency ablation (RFA) technique, is a minimally invasive alternative to surgery for the treatment of venous insufficiency and varicose veins. It has been used for over 15 years as an alternative to vein stripping surgery and over a thousand radio-frequency ablations have been performed at La Jolla Vein Care. RFA is used to treat dysfunctional saphenous veins. Unlike traditional surgery, this procedure can be performed in the office and takes approximately 45 minutes. Patients can walk immediately and return to normal activities immediately after. Lidocaine injections are used to numb the skin. A tiny incision is made typically near the patient’s knee and a slender catheter is then inserted into the vein. The catheter delivers radio-frequency energy to the vein wall, causing it to collapse and seal shut. After the vein is closed, the remaining healthy veins take over and continue their normal function. After the catheter is removed, compression stockings/bandages are applied to the leg.
