What Is Vein Screening?

A vein screening checks for abnormal blood flow within the superficial veins of the legs. A vascular sonographer uses ultrasound to detect if backward blood flow is present in veins beneath the skin, not visible to the naked eye. This is checked at certain segments within the veins of the thigh and calf. If treatment is sought, a full ultrasound examination is required, which is more extensive than a vein screening.

What is the Benefit of Vein Screening?

Venous or vein disease is a common condition that is often-overlooked by most people. 80 million Americans suffer from some form of vein disorder, yet only 1% ever seek care. Vein conditions include varicose veins, spider veins, leg ulcers and chronic venous insufficiency. These conditions can develop into serious problems if left untreated.

Who Should Get Screened?

  • Leg pain
  • Leg swelling
  • Night-time leg cramps
  • Restless legs
  • Skin color and/or texture changes
  • Varicose and/or Spider veins
  • Heaviness
  • Easy fatigability

The following factors increase your risk for venous disease.

  • Age While older people are at a higher risk for venous disease, it can start at any age
  • Heredity is the number one risk factor for venous disease.
  • Women, especially those that have had multiple pregnancies, are three times more likely than men to develop venous disorders.
  • Professions that require long periods of sitting or standing increase one’s risk

What you can expect?

A vascular ultrasound of the legs is performed by a Registered Vascular Technologist, who has specialized expertise and training in vascular ultrasound. However, only a physician can make a diagnosis. A physician uses information obtained from the ultrasound in combination with symptoms and a physical exam.

What is the next step?

This information can help you determine if you are at risk of developing progressive vein issues, and if you should integrate conservative management into your lifestyle, as well as the possibility of future vein treatment.

What is the difference between a free vein screening vs. a free consultation?

Wondering if you should see a doctor about your veins? A free screening can help you determine whether or not you would benefit from a formal consultation with a specialist because the screening will determine if there is reflux in your superficial veins. This is general information, but not a formal consultation. A formal consultation, along with a full ultrasound takes about an hour and a half, and involves a detailed medical history, physical examination, and a customized treatment plan.

What a vein screening doesn’t tell you:

The screening examination does not look at your deep veins to identify a blood clot (deep vein thrombosis) nor does it create a vein ‘road map’ of your specific anatomy. If a deep vein screening and vein map is desired, this is a formal full ultrasound which takes about an hour and is covered by most insurance types.

Wow, where do I begin… how about with 10 stars (5 isn’t enough!). I am very impressed with La Jolla Vein & Vascular. I visited the Vista office and was greeted by the most friendly team ever. Everyone was so nice and welcoming, they really make you feel valued… that’s important especially when you deal with bad anxiety. But they will put you at ease and they know exactly what they are doing. Everything is thoughtfully explained and you feel confident in their diagnosis and treatment plan. The office is so clean and professional. I wish all medical offices, doctors and staff were like this!
